New study shows minority-owned businesses in Baton Rouge pay 3 times higher property taxes than ExxonMobil A new analysis of the property tax rolls in Baton Rouge shows stark disparities in business property tax rates, driven mainly by industrial tax exemptions.
KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT:
  • Industrial tax exemptions benefit .16% of EBR Parish businesses, but increase property taxes for 99.84% of businesses
  • The average EBR Parish business pays 2.4 TIMES as much on the dollar in property taxes as ITEP-exempt businesses ($16.26 vs. $6.83 per $1K property)
  • The average minority-owned business pays 2.9 TIMES as much on the dollar as the parish's most valuable property (ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge Refinery)
  • Homeowners pay 1.6 TIMES higher property taxes as ExxonMobil -- after the homestead exemption
